Our Treatment Approach

At Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, we take a holistic approach to assessing and diagnosing our patients. Children with stones may have other complex medical conditions, which is why we take a personalized, integrated approach to meet the unique needs of your child.

This allows doctors in multiple disciplines to work together to determine the best treatment plan for your child. Our Stone Center team has the ability to consult with other pediatric medical specialties such as Cardiology, Pulmonology and Neurology to meet the specialized needs of your child.

The Stone Center uses three main approaches to treating your child’s condition – educational, medical and surgical management. Your doctors will work together with you to decide what is best for your child.

Education

Patient and family education is individualized based on family history and risk for stone formation. Providing information about diet, fluid intake, medication and exercise to prevent stones is key to minimizing recurrent stone formation and maximizing kidney function.

Medications for Urinary Stones
