Medications for Urinary Stones
The treatment for urinary tract stones in children depends on the size of the stone, the location of the stone, composition of the stone, amount of pain the stone is causing, and whether the stone is blocking any portion of the urinary tract.
Medication may be prescribed to ease your child’s pain, treat symptoms, or to prevent future occurrences. Medications may include:
Pain Medications:
Kidney stones can be very painful. Depending on the severity of the pain, your child may require pain medication.
Fluids:
Your child may require IV fluids if he or she is unable to drink.
Diuretics:
Diuretics (water pills) are medicines designed to remove extra fluid from the body. Diuretics may decrease the buildup of calcium in the urine, helping to prevent stones from recurring in children with certain types of calcium stones.
Citrate Supplements:
Citrate supplements may be recommended for children with calcium and uric acid stones.
Citrate helps remove extra calcium in the urine and can help prevent calcium crystals from forming kidney stones.
