Asia's Story
Asia Werner was born 9 weeks premature and had a defective heart. Without a transplant, her family feared she wouldn't live past her first birthday. Today, she is an 11-year-old soccer player who considers her donor as close as a little brother. Asia's grandmother, Dawn, who adopted her, says the experience has taught her what is really important in life.

When Ethan Daniel was less than a year old, his mother noticed his left eye was puffy. His pediatrician first thought it might be an allergic reaction, but a heart specialist determined Ethan had restrictive cardiomyopathy and needed a heart transplant. Surgeons at Cincinnati Children's helped bridge the way to his transplant with something called a Berlin Heart, a device that helped his heart pump until a heart was available for transplant. "It was life or death," his mom says. And it worked.
