Why does Cincinnati Children’s treat adults who were born with heart defects?
Research shows that adults born with heart defects who seek care from a congenital heart disease specialist at a pediatric hospital are three times less likely to die from surgical complications. However, fewer than 20% of these adults in the U.S. are receiving the specialist care they need.
That’s why Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program cardiologists at Cincinnati Children’s see patients at more than 12 locations across the region, from Louisville, Kentucky, to Dayton, Ohio. As the first nationally accredited comprehensive care center in the region, we understand how to treat all types of congenital heart defects. Contact us to schedule an appointment near you or learn more about what sets us apart.

Cincinnati Children’s Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program is one of the first nationally accredited comprehensive ACHD programs in the United States. Our specialists have experience treating a wide range of congenital heart defects in both children and adults. Studies also show that mortality rates are lowered by more than half when surgeries for congenital heart defects are performed by a congenital heart surgeon at a children’s specialty hospital.
