Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child need a physician referral to make an appointment?
Show

Families may “self-refer” to the to the Pancreas Care Center—a physician referral is not necessary. However, we do like to be in communication with your child’s pediatrician or pediatric gastroenterologist, if possible, so they are able to provide continuity of care.

How should I prepare for our first visit?

Our nurses and social workers will take care of many of the arrangements related to your visit. This may include requesting test results from your child’s doctor and helping you find lodging during your stay. Does your center offer genetic testing for my other family members?
Show

Yes. We can perform genetic testing that may help identify the genetic cause of your child’s pancreatitis. Also, our genetic counselor is available to discuss testing options, review results and answer questions before and after testing.

In addition, if a genetic cause is identified, we can test family members who are experiencing similar symptoms or perhaps no symptoms at all. This testing can provide helpful information that may identify a genetic cause or increased risk of developing pancreatitis. Be sure to ask your nurse about genetic testing and genetic counseling before your first appointment.
