What Is Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD)?

Roughly 1 in 100 children are born with defects or abnormalities called congenital heart defects (CHDs). Children who were treated for a congenital heart defect when they were little may think they do not need any further follow-up with a cardiologist, but that’s not always true.

Research shows that adult patients with complex CHDs, as well as those with minor CHDs, require lifelong expert surveillance by congenital heart experts to avoid complications such as arrhythmia, heart failure, infection, stroke or premature death. Our physicians are experts at treating adult patients with congenital heart defects, and in helping teens transition smoothly from pediatric to adult care.
